GL650 updated to cover Red Hat Satellite 6.19 with RHEL 10 managed hosts
Guru Labs is pleased to announce the release of our updated GL650 Red Hat Satellite v6 Administration (Foreman/Katello) course. It now covers Red Hat Satellite 6.19 with RHEL 10 managed hosts. The course has grown to five days of material, with 31 hands-on labs. Major new topics include image mode (bootc) hosts and Leapp upgrades from RHEL 9 to RHEL 10. Remote execution now runs in pull mode as well as over SSH, and webhooks send Satellite events to other systems. Content management covers rolling content views and multiple content view environments per host. Configuration management is taught with Ansible roles.
GL650 is the most current Red Hat Satellite training available. RH403 Red Hat Satellite 6 Administration, the course from Red Hat, is still based on Satellite 6.15, according to the RH403 course page as of this writing. RH403 runs on RHEL 8. Satellite 6.15 was released on April 23, 2024. Red Hat ended maintenance support for it on November 30, 2025.
What changed after Satellite 6.15
Satellite 6.16 through 6.19 added or changed the features below. GL650 teaches each of them:
| Feature | Satellite release | Where GL650 teaches it |
|---|---|---|
| Satellite Server on RHEL 9 (6.17 and later run only on RHEL 9) | 6.16 | The whole course |
| Simple Content Access only; entitlements removed | 6.16 | Content Management |
| Online backups in place of snapshot backups | 6.16 | Administration |
| Bootable container images as content | 6.16 | Content Management |
| Image mode hosts, with bootc upgrade, rollback and switch jobs | 6.17 | Image Mode Hosts, with a lab |
| RHEL 10 hosts | 6.17 | Managed hosts throughout |
| Rolling content views | 6.18 | Content Management |
| Red Hat Lightspeed advisor on Satellite | 6.18 | Scaling and Lifecycle |
| Multiple content view environments per host | 6.19 | Content Management |
| Puppet integration through OpenVox | 6.19 | Configuration Management with Ansible |
| Leapp upgrades from RHEL 9 to RHEL 10 | 6.19 | Scaling and Lifecycle, with a lab |
What the course covers
The chapters follow the order a team builds out a Satellite:
| Chapter | Labs |
|---|---|
| Satellite and Foreman/Katello | 3 |
| Administration | 3 |
| Content Management | 4 |
| Registering and Managing Hosts | 3 |
| Remote Execution and Integration | 4 |
| Configuration Management with Ansible | 2 |
| Authentication Realms and IdM | 3 |
| Provisioning | 4 |
| Image Mode Hosts | 1 |
| Scaling and Lifecycle | 4 |
The later labs build on the earlier ones. In the IdM chapter, students install a Red Hat Identity Management server. The provisioning labs then boot a blank machine over PXE, and Discovery picks it up. Once provisioned, it enrolls in IdM and runs its Ansible roles on first boot. In the last chapter, students deploy a Capsule for a remote site and provision a host through it. They also export content to a disconnected organization with Inter-Satellite Sync.
The labs use Foreman 3.18 and Katello 4.20. Those are the upstream releases behind Satellite 6.19. Where Satellite and upstream differ (installer and maintain command names, package names, manifests, Red Hat repositories, Lightspeed), the course covers both.
Bugs Guru Labs found and fixed upstream
Guru Labs takes an active role in improving the open source software it teaches. While updating GL650, we found the bugs below, fixed them, and submitted the fixes upstream. The classroom environment runs the fixed versions, so the labs work smoothly and without errors.
Status as of October 22, 2026:
| Bug | Upstream | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Every fresh Katello install leaves a "Failed upgrade task" behind | Redmine #39873 and #39874; PRs katello#11906 and katello#11907 | Merged, in the next Katello release |
| Discovered hosts show empty facts when an organization and location are set | Redmine #39900; PR foreman#11327 | Merged, fixed in Foreman 5.1.0 |
hammer host rebuild-config fails with "unknown parent permission" when an organization and location are set |
Redmine #39915; PR foreman#11332 | Merged, fixed in Foreman 5.1.0 |
| Creating a template input returns 422, and listing them returns 500, when an organization and location are set | Fixed by others in Redmine #39718 and #39742; the Guru Labs 3.18 backport is PR foreman#11326 | Fixed in Foreman 5.1.0; no further 3.18 releases are planned |
foreman-rake templates:cleanup fails with uninitialized constant Setting::TemplateSync |
Redmine #39892; PR foreman_templates#219 | Open, waiting on review |
| A nested host group that inherits its content view can't be given a kickstart repository | Redmine #39916; PR katello#11913 | Open, waiting on review |
hammer subnet info doesn't list the subnet's Discovery proxy |
Redmine #39917; PR hammer-cli-foreman-discovery#70 | Open, waiting on review |
katello-pull-transport-migrate prints grep: warning: stray \ before / on RHEL 10 |
Redmine #39949; PR katello-pull-transport-migrate#9 | Open, waiting on review |
| The samba-common-libs package split (PES event 20203) breaks a Leapp upgrade from 9.8 to 10.2 | PR AlmaLinux/leapp-data#198 | Merged and shipped |
As a fix ships in a Foreman, Katello or Leapp data release, the classroom moves to the released package. Students learn the procedure the way it is meant to work, and the same fixes reach teams that run Foreman, Katello or Satellite.
Two free Satellite resources
Two guides came out of the same research. Red Hat Satellite Best Practices: Avoiding Common Pitfalls covers the design and operating mistakes that cause most Satellite trouble. The Red Hat Satellite Upgrade Checklist lists the checks to clear before the first hop, the commands for every hop, and what changes in 6.17, 6.18 and 6.19.
GL650 Red Hat Satellite v6 Administration (Foreman/Katello) is a five-day course. The topics above are chapters or labs in it.
